Gothenburg, Sweden - Once again Sweden kicked off the national selections' season by choosing the first Melodifestivalen 2014 act. In a competition organised by Swedish Radio P4 and their popular show Svensktoppen, they chose the band Eko as the first act that will compete to represent Sweden in next year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Just like last year the winner of the radio competition Svensktoppen nästa will get a spot in the artist's list of Melodifestivalen 2014, the Swedish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. The final of Svensktoppen nästa took place earlier today at the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg.
The winners were the group Eko, representing the Västerbotten region with the song Yellow. The song will be changed though as the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest state that "the songs must not have been commercially released and/or publicly performed, in full or in part, before 1st September...".
Anna Lidman, the singer of Eko was overjoyed: "I'm crying and laughing by turns!.
It is the second time that this competition is used to choose an artist for Melodifestivalen. Last year Terese Fredenwall was the winner and she performed Breaking The Silence in the 4th semi final of Melodifestivalen 2013.
Melodifestivalen is the most popular tv show in Sweden every year. Since 2002 it has 32 songs that compete for the right to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest. Eko will perform one of those 32 songs, the rest of the artists will be revealed during the autumn.
