Famous for his colourful and androgynous look, Yohio had some success in Japan before entering as a contestant in Melodifestivalen 2013. With Heartbreak hotel, a song he himself had helped to write, Yohio won the first semi-final, earning a place in the grand final in Stockholm four weeks later on 9 March. There, he won the Swedish televote by a clear margin, but took second place to Robin Stjernberg and the song You due to the low number of votes he received from the competition’s international juries.
Since his disappointment, Yohio has been filming his very own fly-on-the-wall reality series, the first episode of which was aired on SVT for the first time last night, 22 April 2013. The show consists of 8 ten-minute episodes and will take viewers on Yohio’s journey through Melodifestivalen to becoming this year’s spokesperson for Sweden at Eurovision.
Indeed, fans will see the 17-year-old singer at home, relaxing with friends, and even discussing his hopes for the future and his relationship with his father, Tommy Rehn, who plays guitar for the Swedish rock band, Corroded.
Yohio will follow in the footsteps of a number of Melodifestivalen stars when he reads the results of the Swedish vote at Eurovision in May. These include Eric Saade, Danny Saucedo, and most recently, Sarah Dawn Finer as Lynda Woodruff.
His debut album, Break the border, was released in Sweden at the end of March. It hit the number one spot in the Swedish album chart. The album will see its Japanese release in May this year. This edition will include some tracks in Japanese.
